Wedding Flowers – Keeping the Cost Down

Wedding Flowers Foam Bouquet

Wedding Flowers Foam Bouquet

As you work through your wedding budget, one sure thing is that it is going to be expensive.  One area where you can save some money is in the wedding flowers and arrangements.  Typically, the cost of wedding flowers is about 10% of the total wedding budget. So one way to keep this cost even lower, take a look at the following tips.

If you are somewhat artistic or if you know someone that is artistic, you can make your own wedding floral arrangements.  Or do whatever you can and leave the rest to your florist. Here are some ideas to get you started in making your own wedding flowers:

1) Look through bridal/flower magazines or search the internet as you are doing now to get a feel for the type of flower arrangements that interests you.  You can even visit florists to see what they have to offer.  Bring along a camera to take some snapshots.  This can help you in deciding the colors and styles.

2) Sometimes “less” is better than “more” when it comes to keeping the floral design simple.  For example, as a table centerpiece, you can have white gladiolas/gladiolus placed in tall vases.  It will look great and very simple to arrange.  The same goes for altar floral arrangements.  For floral arrangements, keep them simple as you will need to transport them in and out of the church easily and quickly.  For altar flowers arrangements, go with low profile vases filled with roses (your favorite color) and place them besides the table (where you will sign your wedding registrar).  During the wedding ceremony, you will be standing between the table and the pews so the floral arrangement will nicely frame you two.  You can also use daisies or carnations if roses are too expensive.

3) Anchor helium-filled balloons with small sacks filled with marbles.  These can be placed as part of the centerpieces or alongside the head table.  These will give “fullness” to the reception room.  If you plan on having kids attend the reception, they can take the balloons home.

4) To make your wedding bouquet, there are two ways to do it:

The first method involves going to a crafts store and purchase a floral foam with handle (See photo above).  This forms the base of your wedding bouquet.  Insert your flowers into the foam starting at the top and working your way to the bottom.  Arrange the flowers so that they form a circular pattern.  Note that you can have a straight handle or an angled handle.  We prefer the angle handle as it will look natural as the wedding flowers will be tilted towards the camera when posing for pictures.

The second method involves arranging the flowers by first holding togther the flowers.  The bouquet should be rounded.  So the center of your bouquet will have the highest flower.  Pull the remaining flowers gently down so that the bouquet will have a circular effect.  Add ribbons and baby breaths to complete the finishing touch.

The above is for a circular wedding flowers bouquet.  Your style may be different. In any case, you should have a photo of your idea bouquet and work towards that.

5) Have a “wedding flowers” activity party with your bridesmaids/groomsmen.   Here you can all have a party and work together to put together all the wedding flowers arrangements.

6) Consider going with silk flowers instead of real flowers.  This can also save you some money.

7) Have you considered going with carnations? It’s an often overlooked inexpensive flower.

8) Another way to keep the cost down is to purchase flowers that are in season.  Getting flowers that are out of season means that you will be shipping flowers from other parts of the world.

Putting together your own wedding flowers will take up some of your time, but if you can get good help from your bridal party, this part of your wedding preparation can be quite fun.  You can also take pride in your work.  You can even tell your guests that you did the flowers arrangements yourself (with the help of your wedding party).

By following these simple tips, you can make your wedding flowers look like a million bucks.
